U.S. Psychology PhD Programs

NRC Report This page contains a comprehensive listing of 185 psychology PhD programs across the United States. The schools are rank-ordered in quality according to the results of a 1995 study conducted by the National Research Council (with "quality scores" taken from a summary of the NRC report published by the American Psychological Society Observer in January, 1996). If you are interested in clinical psychology and would like to see a list of clinical PhD and PsyD programs ranked by EPPP scores, see Clinical Psychology Graduate Programs.

The list of psychology PhD programs below is limited to the United States, but you can also visit the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise web page to see similar quality ratings of Psychology Departments in the United Kingdom. For information on graduate study in Canada, the most comprehensive source is the Canadian Psychological Association Graduate Guide (the CPA Graduate Guide does not rank Canadian programs, but it offers very useful information along with links to individual programs).

The table below contains links to school home pages as well as psychology departments. To contact U.S. schools that are not on this list, you might try using the U.S. University Locator. The American Psychological Society also maintains an Alphabetical List of Psychology Department Links.

Note to Students

The quality of graduate training in specific subdisciplines (e.g., social psychology, clinical psychology) often varies within a particular school, so the NRC ranking should be considered no more than a rough approximation. You would be well advised to consult as many faculty members as possible for feedback on your top school choices before applying to graduate school. Finally, remember that graduate school in psychology is extremely competitive. Apply to as many schools as possible; have your friends, family, and academic advisors look over your application materials; and if you receive letters of rejection, don't lose your sense of humor!
