Although its director will depart at the end of the 1995-96 academic year, the UND Writers Conference will press on.

Robert King, UND professor in the Center for Teaching and Learning and the English Department, as well as a noted poet and essayist, will follow his spouse, Elizabeth Franklin, also of CTL, to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

But fans of the annual spring Writers Conference have little to fear, according to Dan Sheridan, chairman of the UND English Department. King has the 1996 conference planning well under way, and again will direct the 27-year-old event.

And, when the school year resumes, the department will decide upon a replacement for King, who has directed or co-directed conferences since 1990.

UND English professor and poet Jay Meek co-directed the conference with King. English professor John Little, who will be on leave during the 1995-96 academic year, is the conference's founder.

Sheridan said he is confident the conference, which brings together noted writers to discuss a particular theme and read from their works, will have a smooth transition. ``We have a whole year to decide who will do it and how it will be run.''
