MINOT FAMILY PRACTICE CENTER MAY FACE CLOSING

Associated Press

The UND Family Practice Center here has been unable to fill important staff positions and faces a possible closure, the head of the UND SChool of Medicine says.

Dean Edwin James said the clinic will need to hire at least two administrators to meet requirements of the National Accreditation Board.

"Where not here today to talk about closing the program," James said after meeting with clinic officials and area doctors. "That's absolutely not why. We're here to get input from people who believe in the program."

The Minot clinic is one of four medical centers affiliated with the UND School of Medicine. The others are located in Bismarck, Fargo and Grand Forks. They serve as training centers for medical school residents who want to practice family medicine.

The Minot center, which has been in the city for 20 years, employs 35 staff and 12 residents.

The current director, Steven Eisenberg, resigned his post May 1 and will leave practice July 1. The center also still hasn't filled the position opened when Eisenberg was promoted in June 1991.
